userheads info

leslie knope in love
so a couple of days ago i bought this userhead (to me it's lisbeth salander from the girl with the dragon tattoo [swedish] movies :D), and it was great most places but horribly unattractive as a favicon. so i posted on the support board.

Original Request:
i just purchased a new custom userhead and am very dissatisfied with the way it is displaying in the favicon position. i know that the userheads are 17px and favicons are supposed to be 16, and i also knew that the userhead would be resized and used this way since i previously had a different custom userhead. the other one (headphones) was also considerably less attractive at 16px than at 17, but i was able to get used to it. this new one is too blurry and quite ugly. seeing as the whole point of a custom userhead is the look of it, it seems to me that the application of it shouldn't veer out of aesthetically pleasing territory. the userheads are tiny files and there aren't that many -- can someone save separate 16px versions of them*, or else can we have the option of not using our userhead as our journal's favicon? (personally i liked it when all lj pages had the blue pencil, but even the default userhead would look better than what i have now.)

* i know from reading the lj_userheads community profile that [most of? possibly all; i don't know] the userheads already have a 1px margin, so the image itself wouldn't even need to be resized -- the margin would just need to be removed. if someone sent me a zip of all the 17px files, i would volunteer to resave them myself; it'd be quick and easy in photoshop and probably make a lot of people happy.

i also think there should a mention of this favicon resizing issue in the custom userhead faq http://www.livejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=316 if no changes are actually going to be made, so people have the opportunity to know ahead of time that they're paying for something that makes part of their journal unattractive.

Answer:
Thank you for your suggestion. However, in order for your idea to be considered by LiveJournal developers, it must be submitted to the Suggestions community [http://suggestions.livejournal.com/]. You can find information on submitting a suggestion at [http://www.livejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=164].

Comment:
i appreciate that answer and will likely follow up on it, but is there some way i can get credit for the userhead i just purchased so i can go back to the one that was less ugly? i don't want to look at this for a whole year, but buying a second one at this point would just be rewarding someone for bad behavior.

Answer:
Thank you for responding back. We're actually in the process of switching from 17x17 custom userheads to 16x16 userheads. We're also adjusting the places on the site where the userheads appear to fix the blurriness issue. We hope to have this fixed very soon. This fix should be live on the site with the next release, assuming there are no problems found in testing.

somewhere between my comment and the final answer, my request was moved to the account payments category and marked as private. i vaguely suspect that had more to do with my complaint than any actual private information, considering there was none in my request. so i felt the need to post it here; now i can close it and not feel like i'm letting them get away with something. :P at least the good news is that the issue will hopefully be fixed by the end of the month.

support on lj has really gone downhill

not that I expected anything different after how they treated the lovely ladies that redesigned the profile page

yeah, unfortunately all the behind-the-scenes stuff seems to have been going steadily downhill for a while now. :\ i'm still here and likely not going anywhere soon, since i visit/am active in my flist much more than my own journal, and most people/comms i like to keep up with aren't on dw or anything. i keep hoping that lj [as a company] will go back to being awesome and friendly and a place i'm proud and happy to spend my time and money, and i really don't think it's gonna happen. :(
